Changing light in Transparancy




Sophie and I decided to go with a Madagascar reference when we saw these cabinets. The reference comes from a scene in the movie when they find themselves in boxes being shipped to Africa. When prompted to hit something deeper, we connected that idea of being confined and almost mistreated in a way to foreigners/immigrants in different countries, through adding humans into these spaces or boxes. This piece invites people passing by to step into the boxes, imagining what the experience could be like. Contemplation within the boxes and watching people look at you while walking through the hallway could also play into feelings of discomfort that foreigners and immigrants feel.

Drawing Challenges

  For this project, I decided to explore and experiment particularly with mark-making by means of folding paper, using a pencil for the marks on the wallpaper, silver paint/pen marks on the money bills, and I made some abstract lines with glue. I'm from two countries, familiar with both cultures, but wanted to integrate them into something unusually pleasing to look at. I feel overall satisfied with the project; however, it took some time for me to get going.  As I was making marks and thinking of how to collage different pieces of the bills with the bark, wallpaper, or normal paper, I thought about the idea of how sometimes we let the money shape us. I think that money has power, but we should be the ones who shape and decide what we will do with it. Measuring Histories

    For this project, I used a pen and cardboard. I measured the distance from Fairfax, VA, to Tsukishima, Tokyo, Japan, where I currently live. It measured to be about 6770 miles. I wrote/condensed my testimony to around 3170 words and then wrote a Japanese translation to around 3600 characters to sum up to the 6700. I measured my history through the laborious work of writing each word and character, and many emotions were evoked through this process that took around 7-8 hours, on top of the time spent writing/translating my testimony. Through the act of writing itself, I re-visited memories from my childhood where my hand was aching due to intense practice and long writing that my parents/school made me do. The short sayings that are at the bottom of the piece were significant, because I remember doing calligraphy for each character multiple times before performing on the "real deal" throughout my local Japanese elementary education. For this project, I chose to do the second option of the prompt: end where you begin. The concept behind this project was to basically film my weekend in short clips with a transition. In the clips, you can see that my weekend consisted of seeing my girlfriend, hanging out with friends/cutting their hair, playing basketball (where I messed up my back), and eating some Hana Kitchen. I landed back at the same spot in my room to edit this, coincidentally with the same shirt on. This project overall was another playful-ish one for me, so that was fun.
